2.  6 Proven Secrets for Effective Goals

Will you be making New Year Resolutions?  They are not hard to do.  However, research shows that 80% of the New Year's resolutions will not be kept.  We have good intentions but frequently do not know how to make them real.

To make 2007 your best year yet, it is important to understand the science behind goal setting.  The pros and cons of setting goals have been disputed for years.  The good news is that Positive Psychology research indicates that there is value in setting goals.

When you set goals that are meaningful to you (that match your values and use your strengths), you will be more motivated to achieve them.  Also, you will tend to be happier and more satisfied with life when you have a balance of short and long-term (no more tha 3-5 years) goals.

Goals direct your attention and action.  When they follow these secrets, they clarify where you are and helpl motivate you to take action.

3. Getting into Action

Begin by thinking of a goal as a dream with a deadline.  iI you do not like the word goal, think of it as making a commitment to yourself, and only make 1-3 of them.  The dream must be important to you and match your values.  Otherwise, it will not be fulfilling even if you achieve it.

As you think of your goals, keep in mind Kermit the Frog's advice, Success starts with a dream.  Dreams are how we figure out where we want to go.  Life is how we get there, and always allow for traffic (Before You Leap, 2006).

Stephen Kraus, Ph.D. writes about some of the latest findings on goal setting in his book Psychological Foundations of Success (2002).  The following secrets will help keep you on track as you move forward.  The goal needs to:

  • Be attainable and challenging for you to commit to it.
  • Be specific.  Give realistic dates, numbers or time frames.
  • Look at where you want to be or go.  Have a desired outcome with a "want" mindset.  This focuses on possibilities instead of an avoidance outcome with a "should" mindset.
  • Be measurable to give you feedback at set times.  This helps you measure your progress.
  • Have a deadline.  This helps you think more about the goal.  Weekly and monthly goals increase your productivity and motivation.  Know your long-term goal or outcome and then chunk it down into smaller bites.
  • Be inspirational or important to you and in harmony with your needs and values so that you can commit to it.

4. Looking Ahead

Effective goals will give you direction, motivation, and help you refine your strategy when necessary.  With these three elements present, you will achieve your dreams.

Start now by choosing a goal that is important to you and follow the 6 secrets.  You will find that success is possible.

For those of you who want to enhance your personal well-being, I challenge you to find one thing that is good in your life and reflect on it at bedtime.  Do this daily throughout the year.
